Man Utd urged to ditch Sancho interest for lethal Premier League star

Jadon Sancho

Paul Merson has warned Manchester United that they cannot win the league if they spend all their transfer budget on Jadon Sancho.

United have made Sancho their top target for this transfer window. However, they have not been able to meet Borussia Dortmund’s €120m asking price.

While Dortmund are frustrated that United have not told them what they are willing to pay, the Red Devils would likely have to stretch their budget far in order to land Sancho.

But Paul Merson thinks they would be better off spending that money on a proven striker instead.

“Manchester United should forget Jadon Sancho and sign Harry Kane instead – it would make them title contenders,” Merson told the Daily Star.

“With Sancho, it’s a transfer saga that’s dragging on now, and I keep on weighing it up thinking: ‘Is this what United really need?’

“They’ve got Mason Greenwood, who’s going to be a star. Marcus Rashford is only going to get better and better.

“But while Anthony Martial lets nobody down, I think they need an out and out centre forward.

“With Sancho, where is everyone going to play? Do they leave Greenwood out?

“I just think with £100m, why don’t you go and get Kane from Tottenham?

Harry Kane TEAMtalk

“Over 38 games, Harry Kane will score more goals for you than Sancho. I think they have a chance of winning the Premier League if he goes there.

“Would he go? You’d have to ask serious questions of him if he didn’t! Winning trophies is the name of the game and he has a much better chance of doing that at United than Spurs.

“Sancho is a great player. But where do you play him? He’s another winger and they are already strong there. It’s at centre forward where they need help.

“Don’t get me wrong, Sancho would be a great signing for them. He suits their style of play and he would be successful there.

“But I don’t give them any chance of winning the league if they spend all their money on him. For me they need a striker.”

Merson previously added fuel to the fire regarding Kane’s Spurs future by suggesting Jose Mourinho would not get the best out of him.

Despite a strong response from the Tottenham boss, Merson has since defended his stance – and these claims have taken things further.

Indeed, Kane himself has already admitted that he may leave Spurs if they are not showing the right ambition to win trophies.

Meanwhile, as Dortmund insist that United have missed their deadline to sign Sancho this summer, transfer experts claim the saga is not over.

Sky Sports‘ Dharmesh Sheth has claimed that United’s efforts to sign the England international are “not over by a long shot”.

Sheth said: “I’ve been in touch with our colleagues at Sky Germany… and they are convinced that Sancho won’t be moving from Dortmund to United and he will be staying.

“On face value, it’s deal off. But I’m not so sure. Never say never with transfers.

“We know Sancho is willing to go to Old Trafford and I’m told there is potential for him to push for a move to United if they do something they haven’t done up until this point, which is make a substantial offer.”
